Tournaments

Oom Yung Doe tournaments give students the chance to test their training, push past their own limits, and see exactly how far they have come. Every competitor is measured against their own previous performance and their own current stage of training. Students of every rank and age can compete at the Local, State, or Regional level, matched to their own experience.

HOW WE DO TOURNAMENTS

What Is an Oom Yung Doe Tournament?

The competition that matters most is not with the student standing next to you. It is with the version of yourself who competed last time. Each tournament becomes its own milestone, a goal set, prepared for, and carried through in front of instructors and family.

Grading reflects that. Every competitor is measured against a standard suited to their own age, rank, and condition, and the standard rises only as the level itself rises. A first-time competitor and a ten-year student can stand on the same floor, each judged fairly against where they stand in their own training.

Open to students of every rank and age, from a first tournament to a tenth

Three levels of competition, Local, State, and Regional, matched to experience

Fall and Virtual Tournament

This round of Master Level Training offers three Chung Dan Hyungs. Speak with your instructor if you are unsure which one fits your current level.

  • Students demonstrate one to two Dan Hyung or curriculum-level forms, graded on accuracy, balance, strength, and understanding of the form itself. This level is built for students who are new to tournaments or still early in their training, a chance to develop one form thoroughly and carry that same focus into daily life.

  • Students demonstrate two to three Dan Hyungs, short-length forms of roughly fourteen to eighteen movements, taught directly by Master Level Instructors. Because Dan Hyungs and Jhoon Hyungs both carry more Key Foundation movements than curriculum-level forms, the same movements known to change the body fastest, grading at this level also looks at how fully a student has absorbed the form itself, not only whether it was performed correctly.

  • Students demonstrate three to four Jhoon Hyung, medium-length forms of roughly twenty-four to thirty movements. This is the highest level of competition offered, with emphasis placed on connecting the upper, middle, and lower body as one. These longer forms demand considerably more energy and coordination to perform, and every form must meet the required standard to be considered for a medal.

  • Once a year, every Oom Yung Doe school across the country comes together for the National Tournament. Students record their forms ahead of time with their own instructor, and on tournament day, every school gathers to watch the full livestream together. Local, State, and Regional competitors are all part of the same event, broken out by level, so a student competes at their own level while the entire national community watches as one.

Why Participate?

How Tournaments Improve Students Ability & Life

Students and instructors constantly mention how much they've gained from tournaments in surprising ways. Here are some of the most common.

omposure to remain calm and collected, which helps in interviews, presentations, and daily life.

Confidence built from demonstrating in front of a crowd of people.

Sharper focus and intensity in training, built from knowing a performance is coming. Leading to quicker development.

Higher Belt Instructors watching your demonstration and giving your or your main instructor feedback for more improvements to work on.

A measure of progress compared only to your own last tournament.

Stepping out of some students comfort zone and trying something new

None of this depends on the medal earned. The accomplishment lies in choosing to step up to a challenge, and becoming better than who you were.
