Tai Chi Chung
"I used to go to a gym, but that got boring. Then I tried out this place and haven't regretted it for a second. The instructors -- patient, thorough and providing personalized instruction -- make sure everyone improves.
It's a unique mix of martial arts, self defense and mindfulness that challenges the brain as much as the body.
Highly recommend their adult classes and the women's only self defense class."

What This Style Is
Tai Chi Chung is a soft, flowing martial art style from the southern parts of China. Its movements are smooth and continuous, with forms that flow one into the next, often inspired by nature - like willow branches swaying or clouds shifting.
In Oom Yung Doe, this version is sometimes called “fighting Tai Chi” because it emphasizes correct alignment from feet through hands to generate strength, even in gentler movements. Movements are timed with breath, which lets people of any age or condition train safely and to their own level.

What It Develops
Training in Tai Chi Chung brings real, usable benefits for both body and mind:
-
Balance, Mobility & Body Control
Moving slowly and gracefully forces the body to work through every transition. This improves coordination, stability, and joint mobility. Ideal for anyone dealing with stiffness, prior injuries, or wanting to move more freely.
-
Strength & Gentle Conditioning
Even though it's soft, Tai Chi strengthens muscles, especially the middle body and core - and improves joint health. The slow control needed builds endurance, and alignment helps protect against injury.
-
Stress Relief & Mental Calm
The synchronization of breath and movement soothes the nervous system. Practicing regularly can reduce anxiety, bring mental clarity, and promote emotional resilience. Studies support that Tai Chi lowers stress levels and improves mood.
-
Circulation, Lung Health & General Well‑Being
Gentle but full‑body motion helps with circulation, joint lubrication, and breathing capacity. Over time, many students notice improved energy, less pain or stiffness, and more ease in everyday movement. Also shown to help in reducing falls and improving balance in older adults.

History & Lineage
Tai Chi has ancient roots in China, where martial artists and scholars observed nature’s rhythms and sought to replicate balance, harmony, and health through movement. Over the centuries, Tai Chi evolved both as a martial art and wellness practice, with variations focusing more on internal energy (Chi), alignment, breathing, and health.
In Oom Yung Doe, Tai Chi Chung keeps those traditional roots. We teach it with respect for its martial applications (defense, alignment, form) but also emphasize its role in health, longevity, and mental calm. Whether you are young, recovering from injury, or older, Ta iChi Chung offers a path toward movement, strength, and balance that works for your body now - not what it used to do.
