WHAT TO EXPECT
What Training Here Actually Feels Like
Most workouts leave you sore, tired, and counting down the days until you can stop. Oom Yung Doe is built the opposite way. You walk out of every class feeling stronger, looser, and clearer than when you walked in. Not in six months. From the first lesson.
Strength that builds without breaking your body down
Flexibility and mobility that comes back, even after years of stiffness
Real self-defense skills you would actually use
Stress relief that actually lasts past the drive home
Mental focus that carries into work, family, and the rest of your life
Calm under pressure when life starts coming at you
Energy that lasts the whole day instead of running out by 3 PM
Each lesson flushes toxins and stress (negative) that we absorb and has built up throughout your body and affects our state of mind. Through practice, one expels the toxins and allows for rebalancing the mind through the positive energies around you, building your internal strength and enhancing your youthful vigor.

Built for Adults Who Want More Than a Workout

TIRED OF TRENDS
You want something real, not another gym routine.
You have tried everything else. The gym got boring. Yoga was not enough. CrossFit broke something. You want training that works your body and your mind at the same time, and actually holds your interest after week three.

THE PROFESSIONAL
You are running on empty.
Work is relentless. Sleep is bad. Your shoulders live somewhere up around your ears. You have tried meditation apps and they help for about an hour. You want something that actually shuts the noise off and rebuilds you at the same time.

READY FOR ANYTHING
You want to be ready for anything.
You want to be ready for anything. You are not paranoid. You are practical. You want real self-defense skills you could actually use, the kind of confidence that changes how you walk into a room, and the ability to keep the people you love safe if it ever came to that.

FOR THE LONG GAME
You want something with real depth.
You are not looking for a fitness trend. You want a practice with history, structure, and people who take it seriously. Something that shows you who you actually are and what your body and mind are capable of when you stop holding back. Something you can train for the next 30 years instead of the next 30 days.

GAINING BACK
You used to be in shape.
Life got in the way. Work, kids, injuries, time. You are not chasing who you were at 25. You want to feel strong, mobile, and clear-headed in the body you have right now. The kind of strong where you wake up ready, move without thinking about it, and surprise yourself with what you can still do.
Whatever brought you here, the door is open.
Every age · Every condition · Every starting point.
"I accomplished as much in 8 months of training as I had in the previous three years of graduate school. My concentration and creativity improved so dramatically. It is the best investment I have ever made in myself."

WHAT SETS US APART
What you will not find at any other school in the state.
The Line of instructors
A 4 level system you will not find anywhere else.
No matter your rank, you can train with certified instructors at any of our four levels, from someone with 4 years of experience all the way up to a Master with over 50 years of experience. Most schools cannot offer a fraction of that. At most martial arts schools, you train with whoever is available that day. At Oom Yung Doe, every student has access to four tiers of instructors: Local Instructor, Regional Instructor, National Instructor, and Master. It does not matter if you walked in last week or have been training for ten years or more. There is always another step for continued improvement. This structure also means your own local instructors are always learning from the tiers above them for consistent critique on their techniques, which these advanced adjustments can be passed down to you within your lessons. You are never the most advanced student in the room with no one left to learn from, and your instructor is never the most advanced teacher.
Oom Yung Doe
8 complete martial arts taught as one system.
Not eight styles taught one at a time. Eight styles woven into a single practice that builds your entire body at the same time, same effort. Mentally, physically, internally, externally, all developing in a balanced way during your practice. Since 1971, the schools of Oom Yung Doe have always taught “8 Complete Styles Taught as One”. Incorporating Kong Su (Karate and Taekwondo), Kung Fu, Aikido and Hap Ki Do, Judo and Jiu-Jitsu, Tai Chi Chung, Bagua, Kom Doe (Samurai Sword), and Ship Pal Gae (18 Traditional Weapons). Oom Yung Doe also offers much depth into Qi Gong (Nae Gong) and Yoga movements. Most unique to the Oom Yung Doe style are the ultimate forms from Asia; Nae Gong Bope, Way Gong Bope, and Kyong Gong Sul Bope. All taught and critiqued by the Master Level Teaching Team. Proper forms and movements, developing all areas of the body and mind at the same time brings about a deeper benefit one cannot achieve through various forms of exercise, weight training, sports, or punching and kicking. When you are young the body can withstand over and under use of muscles and joints. However, with proper training one can build a proper foundation within themselves at any age or condition. Within a short period of time, you will know and feel the difference.
the lineage
1,500 years of tradition, refined from grandmasters to grandmasters.
Oom Yung Doe traces its lineage back over 1,500 years through generations of East Asian martial arts masters and grandmasters. Refined from masters and grandmasters to masters and grandmasters, this depth of martial arts knowledge and wisdom was brought to the United States by Grandmaster "Iron" Kim in the early 1970s, and it is the same line you train in today at both of our Northwest schools. This is not a system invented in a strip mall in the 1990s. It is not a modern interpretation of something somebody read in a book. When you learn a movement here, you are learning the movement that has been refined by a limited number of accomplished masters and grandmasters over centuries, then passed down without shortcuts and without compromise. You are not training a fitness routine. You are training a practice that has been alive longer than most countries.

what students say
The reasons people stay for years, in their own words.

"Best conditioning I've found over CrossFit and weight training. Self-defense practice is a lot of fun and useful. They teach you techniques for quickly disabling an attacker. After every workout, I feel better than when I started."
Geoff R.

"I'm 72 years old, overweight and out of shape. My doctors have been telling me I need a good fitness program. Martial arts might not be the first thing a senior citizen like myself would look to as an exercise program. You could easily think, 'Oh that would be too hard.' In practice you might be surprised to find it's exactly what you need. A gentle, supportive exercise program that challenges you in just the right way."
John H.

"I am a former Tae Kwon Do student and instructor. I joined Kirkland Oom Yung Doe a little over a month ago and already I am getting more out of this training than I did at my other school. I have a lower back injury, which I was able to discuss with the instructors, and we came up with movements to help me heal and continue training. Over the past month I have gone from not being able to twist or do rolls, to being able to do both without pain."
Laura B.

"I've trained in Oom Yung Doe for over 11 years. These schools focus on the healing knowledge of martial arts as opposed to just the breaking knowledge. Yes, you can still learn very strong self-defense, but the point is to improve yourself and then improve the people and communities around you. The instructors are all very genuine and caring, and the knowledge passed is very deep."
Justin M

"I took 5 years of Taekwondo and American Kickboxing as a teen and was sorely missing martial arts for health, balance, and self-defense. There is a much stronger emphasis here on mind-body connection and seeking balance. Head Instructor MacKenzie and Instructor Michelle have been able to customize my training so that I can develop mental and physical strength. Several months into my training I am feeling more relaxed, with higher stamina and more strength."
Lauren H.

"I used to go to a gym, but that got boring. Then I tried out this place and haven't regretted it for a second. The instructors are patient, thorough, and provide personalized instruction. It's a unique mix of martial arts, self defense and mindfulness that challenges the brain as much as the body."
Carolyn H.

"I've been looking for something special for years, and Oom Yung Doe is it. Instructors are able to work with any age and physical condition, the Kirkland school has a great space for training, and the physical and mental challenges are paced just right for each individual student."
Chris T.

"One-stop shop for meditation, strength, flexibility, mental health, deep breathing, and all those other things they say you should be doing a little bit of every day to maintain your psychological equanimity. Plus you get to swing swords around every once in a while too."
Rowin R.
