WHAT TO EXPECT

What Training Here Actually Produces

Most activities keep juniors entertained for a season. Oom Yung Doe builds something that compounds over years. Students develop physically, mentally, and internally at the same time, in the same class, through the same practice; and parents consistently report that the changes show up everywhere: in school, sports, at home, and in how their child carries themselves.

Confidence that shows in how they carry themselves

Focus and self-discipline that carries directly into academics

Real self-defense capability: the kind that means they are never an easy target

Physical strength and coordination that develops correctly, at any starting point

Respect, perseverance, and mental resilience built through genuine challenge

A screen-free practice with enough depth to hold serious interest for years

Built for Juniors Who Are Ready for More Than a Sport

The Parent Who Wants More

You want your child to develop real character, not just a hobby.

Team sports are fine. But you are watching your child move through activities without something that challenges them to grow mentally, physically, and in how they treat themselves and others. You want a practice with structure, depth, and instructors who hold real expectations.

Courage 7 (Comp).jpg

The Quiet One

They are capable of more than they know.

Your child is reserved. They hold back. They have not yet found something that shows them what they are capable of. Training here does not push students through a class; it reveals to them, gradually and specifically, what they can develop when the instruction fits the individual.

The Scattered One

You want them to learn to focus.

Screens, distraction, difficulty following through; you have tried other activities and none of them demanded enough. Traditional martial arts training requires presence. The structure of correct practice trains attention in a way that carries into the classroom and the rest of daily life.

The Confident One

They have energy and drive. Give them something worthy of it.

Your child is not the problem. They need a challenge that matches them. Eight complete martial arts, weapons training, and a lineage that goes back fifteen centuries gives a motivated junior something that does not have a ceiling and does not get boring after the first month.

The One Who Has Been Targeted

You want them to walk with confidence that protects them.

Telling a child to walk away only works when they believe they have standing. Real self-defense capability, earned through correct training, changes the way a young person carries themselves entirely. Bullies sense the difference before a word is spoken.

Whatever brought you here, the door is open.

Every age  ·  Every condition  ·  Every starting point.

"I started training about 4 months ago and my self confidence has soared. I no longer get picked on and targeted by bullies, and I feel better mentally, physically and spiritually. I plan to train until I'm a black belt or higher due to how much this training has helped me excel in my scholastic and home life. Plus, I get to play (train technically) with cool weapons, and I don't think I've ever enjoyed something this much."

WHAT SETS US APART

What you will not find at any other school in the state.

The Line of instructors

A 4 level system you will not find anywhere else.

No matter your rank, you can train with certified instructors at any of our four levels, from someone with 4 years of experience all the way up to a Master with over 50 years of experience. Most schools cannot offer a fraction of that. At most martial arts schools, you train with whoever is available that day. At Oom Yung Doe, every student has access to four tiers of instructors: Local Instructor, Regional Instructor, National Instructor, and Master. It does not matter if you walked in last week or have been training for ten years or more. There is always another step for continued improvement. This structure also means your own local instructors are always learning from the tiers above them for consistent critique on their techniques, which these advanced adjustments can be passed down to you within your lessons. You are never the most advanced student in the room with no one left to learn from, and your instructor is never the most advanced teacher.

Oom Yung Doe

8 complete martial arts taught as one  system.

Not eight styles taught one at a time. Eight styles woven into a single practice that builds your entire body at the same time, same effort. Mentally, physically, internally, externally, all developing in a balanced way during your practice. Since 1971, the schools of Oom Yung Doe have always taught “8 Complete Styles Taught as One”. Incorporating Kong Su (Karate and Taekwondo), Kung Fu, Aikido and Hap Ki Do, Judo and Jiu-Jitsu, Tai Chi Chung, Bagua, Kom Doe (Samurai Sword), and Ship Pal Gae (18 Traditional Weapons). Oom Yung Doe also offers much depth into Qi Gong (Nae Gong) and Yoga movements. Most unique to the Oom Yung Doe style are the ultimate forms from Asia; Nae Gong Bope, Way Gong Bope, and Kyong Gong Sul Bope. All taught and critiqued by the Master Level Teaching Team. Proper forms and movements, developing all areas of the body and mind at the same time brings about a deeper benefit one cannot achieve through various forms of exercise, weight training, sports, or punching and kicking. When you are young the body can withstand over and under use of muscles and joints. However, with proper training one can build a proper foundation within themselves at any age or condition. Within a short period of time, you will know and feel the difference.

the lineage

1,500 years of tradition, refined from grandmasters to grandmasters.

Oom Yung Doe traces its lineage back over 1,500 years through generations of East Asian martial arts masters and grandmasters. Refined from masters and grandmasters to masters and grandmasters, this depth of martial arts knowledge and wisdom was brought to the United States by Grandmaster "Iron" Kim in the early 1970s, and it is the same line you train in today at both of our Northwest schools. This is not a system invented in a strip mall in the 1990s. It is not a modern interpretation of something somebody read in a book. When you learn a movement here, you are learning the movement that has been refined by a limited number of accomplished masters and grandmasters over centuries, then passed down without shortcuts and without compromise. You are not training a fitness routine. You are training a practice that has been alive longer than most countries.

My son started training one month ago, and already we have seen a big improvement in his focus at school and his attitude at home.

"I looked at several other schools prior to choosing Oom Yung Doe for my daughter. I highly recommend this school. I've seen her flourish under excellent instructors. The head instructors have a high emotional acumen and are able to motivate the students without using fear and intimidation. My daughter has gained confidence, discipline, and is learning what is possible through hard work."

"I have had my children training at Oom Yung Doe for almost a year now. The instructors have a wonderful understanding of the way children need to be trained, not only where they are at physically, but where they are at mentally. The foundation of the many different styles is set first, and when the child was comfortable and ready to be challenged, they move on. We are going on three years now and still love this place. My boys are strong and confident and have competed in tournaments and one even earned a bronze medal."

"Both of my children started in April 2024. Both have improved dramatically in self confidence, control and focus. We really enjoy the classes and the instructors. We always feel welcome. The facility is well kept and clean. I would highly recommend Oom Yung Doe to kids and adults; it's a wonderful place to train."

"My child has been taking lessons for years, and it has done wonders. Not everybody is successful with children who have special needs. The instructors have a manner that engages kids and drives them to keep stretching their abilities. At the same time, they are warm and caring to each individual. I've never seen a child they couldn't reach."

"I'm very picky about the classes and activities my child attends. After trying a few different ones I can say that Oom Yung Doe is the best choice. The instructors are dedicated, well trained and very much involved in my child's training and overall development. This is so much more than a physical martial arts class; it teaches children important life skills, patience and respect."
