Instruction Fitted to Every Individual.

Ages 18+
Adults
The Eight Styles harmonized for the full demands of adult life: real physical power, practical self-defense for those that need more challenge than what they are getting from their current workout routine. Perfect for those looking to relieve stress and tension that accumulates through daily living. For the younger adult seeking depth, challenge, and a practice worth committing to; for the adult in their thirties and forties managing the physical toll of a demanding life; and for those in their fifties and beyond looking to restore what conventional fitness could not.

Ages 9-16
Juniors
These are the years when habits become character. Juniors in Oom Yung Doe develop leadership, refined focus, confidents, practical self-defense ability, and the kind of personal discipline that does not require external enforcement. The school provides the structure and the Correct Knowledge; the student provides the effort; the results follow naturally.

Ages 6-9
Kids
Respect, sustained attention, and consistent effort are not qualities that can be praised into a child; they must be developed through structured practice over time. This is the age where the work begins to hold. Confidence formed here, built on real ability rather than encouragement alone, carries forward into every area of a child's life.

Ages 4-5
Pre-Kids
A child's first encounter with structured instruction. Classes develop the coordination, balance, and ability to listen and follow direction within a group setting that form the foundation for the Kids program. Patient, formal, and welcoming; the earliest introduction to traditional training at the age when correct habits are most naturally formed.

Is there a contract?
No long-term contract is required to begin. Training programs are structured to give students the time needed to develop meaningfully, but enrollment is never a pressure commitment. The focus is on whether the training is the right fit; that is best determined through experience, not obligation.
Do you offer a family discount?
Yes. A discount is applied for each additional family member who enrolls. Contact the school directly for current details; the front desk will walk you through the specifics based on your family's situation.
I have never done martial arts before. Is this the right place to start?
Yes. The majority of students who walk through the door have no prior martial arts experience. The individualized method means instruction begins exactly where you are, regardless of fitness level, age, or background. There is no prerequisite for beginning, all you need to do is just show up as you are.
I have a previous injury or chronic condition. Can I still train?
In almost all cases, yes. Students have arrived carrying chronic back pain, in a wheelchair, arthritis, post-surgical limitations, and repetitive strain injuries that conventional fitness and physical therapy could not resolve. Speak with the instructor before your first lesson; movement will be adjusted to your specific condition from the start.
What if I travel frequently for work?
Students who travel regularly are able to pause their training at any time. Life does not always allow for a fixed schedule, and the school accommodates that reality. Simply speak with your instructor and arrangements will be made accordingly.
What is a 501(c)(3) and why does it matter?
A 501(c)(3) is a federally recognized non-profit organization under the United States tax code. It means the school exists solely to serve its students and community, not to generate profit for owners or shareholders.

Oom Yung Doe Northwest (Federal Tax ID: 82-2858274) operates as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Every enrollment directly supports the preservation and teaching of a 1,500-year lineage and the health and development of the students and families we serve. Unlike a commercial gym or franchise martial arts school, there are no investors to satisfy and no franchise fees driving decisions. The school exists for one purpose: to preserve and pass on Correct Knowledge to those who seek it. All donations are tax deductible.
Can I watch my child's class?
Yes. Parents are welcome to observe classes. Many parents find that watching the lesson gives them a clear sense of how instruction works and how their child is developing within the system.
Can my children train together in the same class?
In many cases, yes. Children ages six to nine train in the Kids program and juniors ages ten to sixteen train together in the Juniors program. Siblings close in age are often able to train at the same time, which many families find convenient. In select cases where a younger student demonstrates the focus and maturity to follow instruction at the Juniors level, exceptions can be made. Speak with the instructor at your trial lesson; they will assess both students and make the appropriate recommendation.
My child has ADHD. Is this a good fit?
Traditional Moo Doe training has proven particularly well suited to students with ADHD. The structured, focused nature of the lessons, combined with the individualized method, gives instructors the ability to work with each student's specific needs rather than against them. Physical movement paired with mental focus is at the core of every class; many parents of students with ADHD report marked improvements in attention, self-regulation, and confidence within the first few months of consistent training.
What ages do you teach?
Classes are available beginning at age four through the junior years, and into adulthood with no upper age limit. A four-year-old, a forty-year-old, and a seventy-year-old each receive different instruction fitted to their specific body and condition. Age is never a barrier to beginning.
What should I wear to a trial lesson?
Comfortable clothing is all that is needed. No uniform or equipment is required for your first visit. The instructor will guide you through everything before the class begins.
Do you offer women's self-defense classes?
Yes. Both schools offer free women's self-defense seminars open to the community twice a month. Self-defense principles are also embedded throughout the regular adult curriculum. Contact the school nearest to you for the current schedule.
How is Oom Yung Doe different from other martial arts schools in Kirkland or Seattle?
Most schools in the area teach a single style or a recreational combination of styles. Oom Yung Doe preserves eight complete martial arts as one unified system, transmitted through an unbroken lineage traceable back fifteen centuries. Instruction is never standardized; it is individualized to each student. No other school in Washington State teaches the complete system in this way.
Is there Oom Yung Doe Schools near me in Kirkland or Seattle?
Yes. Oom Yung Doe Northwest operates two schools in the region (soon to be three): one in Kirkland serving the Eastside including Juanita Beach, Totem Lake, Bellevue, and Redmond; and one in Northgate serving North Seattle including Shoreline, Maple Leaf, and Lake City. And we also have a school in Burlington, a newer satellite location.
Do you offer kids and teens classes?
Yes. Classes are structured by age group: Pre-Kids for ages three to five, Kids for ages six to nine, and Juniors for ages ten to seventeen. Each group receives instruction appropriate to their stage of development, within the same traditional system taught to adults.
What is Moo Doe?
Moo Doe is the traditional East Asian term for Martial Arts. Oom Yung Doe preserves and teaches this root system in its most complete form: eight distinct styles taught as one unified practice, rather than as separate disciplines. It is the foundation from which styles like Kung Fu, Tai Chi, and Jiu Jitsu each developed independently over centuries.
