INSIDE THE TRAINING
The training adults stay with for decades.
Most students describe this as the most rewarding training they have stayed with, and the only practice they have not abandoned to boredom or injury. The work asks something real of you, and the training is fit to your body from day one. A high-school athlete and a forty-year-old returning to a practice that matters train in the same room; both are challenged, both progress at their own pace, and both leave better than they arrived. You are taken further than you thought you could, and come back stronger for it.
Stronger every week, not worn down by the work.
Real self-defense skill that holds up under pressure, not just on a drill floor.
Steadier nerves through long days, hard meetings, and crowded streets.
Sharper focus carried into your work and the rest of your life.
Better sleep and energy that lasts past three in the afternoon.
Faster recovery between sessions, supported by traditional East Asian herbal formulas, herbal apparatuses and equipment developed by true Martial Arts Masters and Grandmasters.
WHO THIS IS FOR
Built for Adults Who Want to Be Ready When It Matters, and in the Best Condition of Their Lives While They Learn

TIRED OF FEELING UNSAFE
You are tired of looking over your shoulder
Walking to your car at night should not feel like a calculated risk. Neither should riding the bus, jogging alone, or answering your front door after dark. You do not want to live in fear anymore. You want skills that make you dangerous enough to never have to use them.
_JPG.jpg)
DONE WITH THE GYM
You want training that means something, not another routine.
You have done the gym, the classes, the apps, the programs, and you are tired of training that bores you within weeks and leaves you in the same condition you started in or injured. You want a practice that demands something of you, develops you in ways no machine ever could, and is still challenging you ten years from now.

READY FOR ANYTHING
You want to be ready for anything.
You are not paranoid. You are practical. You want real self-defense skills you could actually use and the ability to keep the people you love safe if it ever came to that. You want the training to back up the instinct you already have.

QUIET STRENGTH
You want confidence that does not come from aggression.
You are not looking for a fight. You are looking for the composure to walk away from one, knowing that if you had to engage, it would be over in seconds. You want the kind of calm that changes how people read you before a word is spoken.

STARTING FROM ZERO
You have never trained in anything but you know you should.
You have thought about it for years, maybe decades. You just never knew where to start or whether a school would take you seriously as a complete beginner. This is that place, and every student in this school started exactly where you are right now.
Whatever brought you here, the door is open.
Every age · Every condition · Every starting point.
"Best conditioning I found, over CrossFit and weight training. Self-defense practice is engaging and useful. After every workout, I feel better than when I started."
Geoff R. · Adult student, now a Head Instructor in Oom Yung Doe Northgate

Why Most Self-Defense Fails
Most self-defense gives you a false sense of security.
Most programs teach you moves that work against a cooperative partner in a controlled room, but against someone bigger, faster, and actually trying to hurt you, those moves fall apart. The injury rates are high because training partners are uncontrolled, and over 75% of students quit before they ever learn anything useful. There is no preparation for real stress or panic, so students freeze when it actually matters. That is because most programs skip the foundation entirely. They throw you into sparring before you have built the speed, power, coordination, and accuracy to make any technique work under pressure. You end up memorizing moves you cannot actually execute when your adrenaline is pumping and your hands are shaking. At Oom Yung Doe, we do not put headgear on you and have you go at it. Sparring does not come until a higher rank, and by the time it does, your body already knows what to do. You start by building the fundamentals: speed, power, coordination, accuracy, and timing. From there you learn beginner techniques that can be applied across many situations, making you effective long before you reach an advanced level. Everything is taught in a fun, safe, and controlled environment where your only job is to get better than you were last week.
The System
Eight complete arts trained as one self-defense curriculum.
Every martial art has a blind spot. Striking styles leave you helpless on the ground. Grappling styles leave you pinned against multiple attackers. A single style can only prepare you for the situations that style was designed for, and real attacks do not follow a script. We train eight traditional styles as one system so there are no blind spots and you can adapt to any situation the moment it happens. Our system is derived from eight complete martial arts: Kong Su (Karate and Taekwondo), Kung Fu, Aikido and Hap Ki Do, Judo and Jiu-Jitsu, Tai Chi Chung, Bagua, Kom Doe (Samurai Sword), and Ship Pal Gae (18 Traditional Weapons). We also teach Qi Gong and Nae Gong as part of the curriculum. These are not taught in separate classes. They are woven into one system, and you learn how to use them together so you can adapt to any kind of confrontation. Whether you need to end the situation right then and there or control it without causing any damage, you have the tools to choose. Standing control from Aikido. Throws and takedowns from Judo. Strikes from Kong Su. Joint manipulation from Hap Ki Do. Each one covers the gaps the others leave. You do not specialize in one response. You develop the ability to respond to anything. These are the same techniques that were used to prepare Seattle police officers before major civil unrest in the early 2000s. The same system taught to a foreign special forces soldier who recognized our methods from elite military training. And the same techniques that allowed an underage female student, targeted by a predator who had already attacked 12 others that day, to drop him to the floor and hold him there until police arrived. You are not learning theory. You are learning what has been proven under real pressure for over 1,500 years.
the lineage
1,500 years of tradition, passed down and refined through masters and grandmasters.
These techniques were not invented in a strip mall in the 1990s. They were originally developed by emulating nature to bring about a deeper connection of mind, body, spirit offering humans a way to achieve their ultimate potential. For centuries, this knowledge was closely guarded and passed down only within the lineage, through true masters and grandmasters, without compromise, to protect the secret forms, movements, and techniques so they do not fall into the hands of people with bad intentions. Grandmaster "Iron" Kim brought the system to the United States in the early 1970s, and it is the same line you train in today at our schools. What that means in practice is simple. When you learn a defensive movement here, you are learning the movement that has been tested in warfare, by law enforcement, and by ordinary people facing extraordinary danger across fifteen centuries of refinement. Not a modern interpretation. Not a weekend certification course. The real thing, taught by instructors who have spent their lives training in it. You are not learning a fitness routine with a self-defense label. You are learning a system that has kept people alive longer than most countries have existed.
what students say
The reasons people stay for years, in their own words.

"Best conditioning I've found over CrossFit and weight training. Self-defense practice is a lot of fun and useful. They teach you techniques for quickly disabling an attacker. After every workout, I feel better than when I started."
Geoff R.

"I have practiced and taught Oom Yung Doe for many years. I have personally gained many benefits including developing greater strength, speed, agility and skill. I have also developed self-discipline, determination, confidence and self-reliance. Of course I have had my share of self-defense incidents from time to time over the years and am grateful to Oom Yung Doe and Grand Master 'Iron' Kim for giving me the skill and ability to completely dominate my attackers in these situations."
James K.

"I used to go to a gym, but that got boring. Then I tried out this place and haven't regretted it for a second. The instructors are patient, thorough, and provide personalized instruction. It's a unique mix of martial arts, self defense and mindfulness that challenges the brain as much as the body."
Carolyn H.

"I've been going here about 3x a week for 2.5 months now. Comparatively the quality of instruction here is higher and you receive much more individualized attention. You get into technical aspects and ways to effectively utilize your strengths for self defense right away. There are multiple areas of focus as they teach several styles, and you can start training with weapons right away."
Joy H.

"I am a former Tae Kwon Do student and instructor. I joined Kirkland Oom Yung Doe a little over a month ago and already I am getting more out of this training than I did at my other school. I have a lower back injury, which I was able to discuss with the instructors, and we came up with movements to help me heal and continue training. Over the past month I have gone from not being able to twist or do rolls, to being able to do both without pain."
Laura B.

"I've trained in Oom Yung Doe for over 11 years. These schools focus on the healing knowledge of martial arts as opposed to just the breaking knowledge. Yes, you can still learn very strong self-defense, but the point is to improve yourself and then improve the people and communities around you. The instructors are all very genuine and caring, and the knowledge passed is very deep."
Justin M

"I took 5 years of Taekwondo and American Kickboxing as a teen and was sorely missing martial arts for health, balance, and self-defense. There is a much stronger emphasis here on mind-body connection and seeking balance. Head Instructor MacKenzie and Instructor Michelle have been able to customize my training so that I can develop mental and physical strength. Several months into my training I am feeling more relaxed, with higher stamina and more strength."
Lauren H.

"One-stop shop for meditation, strength, flexibility, mental health, deep breathing, and all those other things they say you should be doing a little bit of every day to maintain your psychological equanimity. Plus you get to swing swords around every once in a while too."
