INSIDE THE TRAINING
Adults Arrive Here from many Different Directions.
Tai Chi and Qi Gong are among the oldest internal practices in the East Asian martial tradition, developed across centuries by practitioners who understood that the body, the breath, and the mind cannot be cared for separately. Moving Meditation is the union of the three: a state in which the body moves with intention and the mind rests inside the movement.
At our Northgate school, these practices are taught inside a verified 1,500-year lineage and adjusted to the specific body of each student.
Relief from chronic stress and a quieter, less hurried mind
Mobility, balance, and ease of movement restored without strain
Internal energy and vitality cultivated through breath and form
A steadier nervous system that holds its calm through the day
A practice that deepens with age rather than wearing the body down
The clarity, focus, and groundedness that come with consistent practice
Who the Practice Has Served
Adults Arrive Here from all Directions.

The Stressed and Overworked
Adults whose work and responsibilities have kept the nervous system on for years, who have tried meditation apps, weekend hikes, and the gym without lasting effect. Tai Chi and Qi Gong reach a layer those approaches do not.

Those Seeking Mobility and Longevity
Adults whose bodies have begun to feel less available than they once were; tighter, slower, less certain. The Individualized Method restores movement without strain, and the gains hold for decades rather than weeks.

The Practitioners and Seekers
Adults already drawn to internal practice, meditation, learning more about yourself, or Eastern philosophy, who are looking for a tradition with real depth rather than a watered-down version. The 1,500-year lineage is what distinguishes this class from any with a similar name.

Those Recovering Themselves
Adults working through chronic conditions, injury, burnout, or the accumulated weight of difficult years, who need a practice that meets them where they are and helps the body return to its natural condition.

Those Entering a New Chapter
Adults stepping into retirement, an empty nest, or a slower season of life, who want a practice that gives the years ahead structure, vitality, and depth. Tai Chi and Qi Gong have served exactly this purpose for centuries.

WHAT SETS US APART
The Depth Behind the Practice.
A Verified 1,500-Year Tradition
The lineage is the reason this class is unlike any other Tai Chi or Qi Gong class in the region.
Tai Chi and Qi Gong are taught in many places, but are rarely linked back to a lineage thats been refining the movements for centuries. Our Northgate school is part of a 1,500-year lineage of Traditional Moo Doe that traces back to the first-generation Grandmaster Bagua and runs through the modern era under Grandmaster "Iron" Kim, the 8th Generation Grandmaster who won the All Asia Championship in 1956 and was given the title Chon Shim Pan Whey Won Chaeng, meaning Supreme Judge and Arbiter. Inside this tradition, Tai Chi and Qi Gong are not standalone practices. They are two within the eight harmonized martial arts taught as one complete system, refined across centuries by practitioners who understood that the body, breath, and mind cannot be cared for separately. What you receive on the floor at our Northgate school is the same Correct Knowledge that has been preserved and passed down inside this lineage for generations.
The Individualized Method
Every movement adjusted to your specific body, from your first class forward.
One of the defining features of training inside this lineage is that no movement is ever taught in a generic form. The Individualized Method means that every form, every breath pattern, and every adjustment is fit to the specific body of the student, accounting for age, condition, prior injury, mobility, and goal. A four-year-old, a thirty-year-old athlete, and a seventy-five-year-old beginner each receive instruction adjusted to their specific condition. This is why the system serves every age and every body, and why students with chronic conditions, post-surgery limitations, and long-standing injuries frequently see meaningful change here after other approaches plateaued. For an adult walking into a Tai Chi or Qi Gong class for the first time, this is the single most important difference between what we teach and what is taught at a community center, a video class, or a fitness studio. You are never asked to keep up with anyone but yourself. The instruction begins where your body is, and the practice grows with you from there.
Adults Consistently Report Feeling Better
The gains of correct internal practice do not fade with age. They compound.
Across decades of teaching this lineage, the schools have documented tens of thousands of accounts of students whose bodies returned to a state of Good Condition after years or decades of decline; students who arrived with chronic back pain, arthritis, post-surgery limitations, sleep disruption, anxiety, and the accumulated weight of long, demanding lives. Many report that they feel stronger, looser, and more clear-headed in their fifties, sixties, and seventies than they did in their thirties. The principle behind this is that the body, given the right kind of internal training, restores itself. Tai Chi, Qi Gong, and Moving Meditation taught inside this lineage are designed to support that restoration directly: the breath deepens, the posture organizes, the nervous system settles, sleep grows quieter, and energy returns. The work happens at the underlying condition, which is why the gains do not fade the way fitness gains do. What you build here, you keep.
what students say
The reasons people stay for years, in their own words.

"I'm 72 years old, overweight and out of shape. My doctors have been telling me that I need a good fitness program. In actual practice you might be surprised to find it's exactly what you need; a gentle, supportive exercise program that challenges you in just the right way."
John H.

"After just a short time training, less than two months, I can already see where my condition has improved. I can touch my toes again and I wake up without arthritis pain in my hands."
Surya P.

"I was sorely missing martial arts for health, balance, and self defense. There is a much stronger emphasis here on mind-body connection and seeking balance. I have bad habits such as pushing myself too far to the point of illness, physical damage, or runaway thoughts that create anxiety. They have been able to customize my training so that I can develop mental and physical strength while working to minimize my inflammatory behavior. Several months into my training and I'm feeling more relaxed with higher stamina and more strength."
Lauren H.

"I have gained an incredible amount from Oom Yung Doe training. I have been a competition swimmer, spent time in gyms, and done other martial arts, but I found the complete mind/body/spirit development I was looking for in Oom Yung Doe. I would highly recommend it to anyone who is looking for a healthy life."
Justin M

"I used to go to a gym, but that got boring. Then I tried out this place and haven't regretted it for a second. The instructors are patient, thorough, and provide personalized instruction. It's a unique mix of martial arts, self defense and mindfulness that challenges the brain as much as the body."
Carolyn H.

"I've been going here about 3x a week for 2.5 months now. Comparatively the quality of instruction here is higher and you receive much more individualized attention. You get into technical aspects and ways to effectively utilize your strengths for self defense right away. There are multiple areas of focus as they teach several styles, and you can start training with weapons right away."
Joy H.

"I am a former Tae Kwon Do student and instructor. I joined Kirkland Oom Yung Doe a little over a month ago and already I am getting more out of this training than I did at my other school. I have a lower back injury, which I was able to discuss with the instructors, and we came up with movements to help me heal and continue training. Over the past month I have gone from not being able to twist or do rolls, to being able to do both without pain."
