Self Defense

Oom Yung Doe Self-Defense

Oom Yung Doe Self-Defense developed over the centuries through generations of practitioners.  Although known as "Eight different Moo Doe taught as One," the movements in Oom Yung are particular and unique to the style and surpass not only any other single martial art, but all other martial arts combined.

Building the Proper Foundation

It is important that a student develops the proper foundation of skill and ability and does not just practice technique.  Students begin by building strength, coordination, agility, power and control by learning how to jump, roll, sweep, slide and spin.  Long hyung (forms of movement) and especially weapons training provide additional skills to defend against one or many assailants.  True skill and ability comes from developing the body internally as well as externally, mentally as well as physically.   Students must develop the mental focus and calm essential in executing self-defense movements.   Without this development, most technique will be ineffective in an actual situation.

Street ready self-defense

Many styles that emphasize tournament competition do not prepare someone for an actual situation where there will be no rules or judges.  Often students are not taught techniques that are very effective in an actual situation, because they are not allowed in tournaments and because the instructor does not know how to teach them without causing injury.  The groin, eyes, head, knees and other areas are very important when learning how to defend oneself and are often ignored in tournaments.  Also, students who focus on winning tournaments are so accustomed to cutting their movement that they cannot strike effectively in an actual situation.

Correct Practice without Injury

It is important that a student is taught how to practice their self-defense correctly so that it will be effective, but also, will not injure the other students.  Oom Yung Doe Self-Defense is taught according to the students’ ability so that they will not be injured in the classroom, but can still challenge their full capability.  Often in common martial arts schools, students receive worse injuries from their training than they ever do from someone attacking them.  Oom Yung Doe practice is taught in a completely safe manner using correct sparring technique.

Beyond Physical Self-Defense

It is much more likely that you will be attacked verbally or with stress from work and family than physically on any given day.  While Oom Yung Doe students who build the proper foundation are completely capable of defending themselves if need be, they benefit even more from the mental calm and physical health gained from their practice.  The body gains strength internally to not only defend against an attacker but germs and viruses that attack the body.  The mental control and focus a student develops gives them the ability to handle the stress and frustrations of daily life.
