Community involvement is one of the important values encouraged by The School of Oom Yung Doe™. It has always encouraged active involvement by its' members in the support of many worthwhile charities and organizations."
On Saturday, April 13th, instructors and students joined hundreds of people of all ages in the March of Dimes WalkAmerica.
"Now in its 32nd year, WalkAmerica is the first and best-loved walking event in the nation. The March of Dimes biggest fund-raiser, WalkAmerica supports lifesaving research and innovative programs that save babies born prematurely or with birth defects. Since its beginning in 1970, WalkAmerica has raised more than $1 billion to help give babies a fighting chance."
The six mile walk started at Safeco Field and went along the waterfront to Myrtle Edwards Park, then looped back to finish at Safeco Field. One of the highlights was at the opening when a father of a now healthy sixteen year-old daughter told the story of how she had been born two and a half months early and how the March of Dimes helped his family. One instructor commented, "Seeing the courage of such families is truly inspiring and makes you appreciate everything you do have." Over $1500 dollars were raised by the instructors and students of the four Puget Sound Oom Yung Doe Schools.
