MDA FUNDRAISER 2006 - 2007
As part of the 2006 holiday season, the Pacific Northwest Schools of Oom Yung Doe began a fundraiser to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s summer camp program. Students and instructors from all of the local schools helped raise money to support this program, which is free to those who attend. The donations were managed by the Pacific Northwest Traditional Moo Doe Association, a non-profit organization founded to educate the public about Traditional Moo Doe and to work with the Oom Yung Doe schools in supporting and building our local communities.
The fundraiser lasted until early 2007, when the schools and the Association were pleased to present a check for $3,123.99 to an MDA program coordinator. The MDA also presented the schools with a plaque thanking them for their efforts. Students and instructors watched a short video about the summer camp program before making the check presentation, and it turned out that one student has two children who attend the summer camp every year.
Here are some excerpts from the MDA’s Website:
“Since 1955, MDA has built bridges and knocked down barriers for youngsters with neuromuscular diseases by providing an unforgettable week at MDA summer camp. Campers say the week they spend at MDA camp is ‘the best week of the year.’”
“In addition to knowledgeable camp staff and medical personnel, most campers have his or her own one-on-one volunteer, who helps with all aspects of both fun and personal care.”
“At MDA Camp, barriers simply do not exist. Each camp provides a wide range of activities especially designed for young people who have limited mobility or use wheelchairs. Accessible activities range from outdoor sports such as swimming, boating, baseball, football and horseback riding, to less physically demanding programs like arts and crafts and talent shows.”
This program makes a huge difference in the lives of the families who are affected by neuromuscular disease, and we are proud to be helping to make it a reality.
